How Skype Is
Changing the Job Interview

There are many methods of conducting interviews these
days, you have: · Group Interviews · Tag- team interviews · The Screening interview, (most common on college campuses). · Interviews over lunch · Stress interview · Informational interview Most all of these interviews are done face to face with the recruiter(s) sitting across from the applicant. There are many benefits for both the recruiter and the applicant to physically be together during the interview. In my experience, the applicant is more relaxed and the recruiter is more likely to get a better assessment of the applicant’s talents. The body language is also much more readable with the applicant sitting across the desk. So, as I talk about the opportunities that video interviewing offers, I want to also be clear that in my opinion the most effective means to assessing talent is sitting across the desk from the person you are interviewing. With that said, there is another method of interviewing that is gaining popularity and that is video interviewing. We are always assessing the services we offer to our employers and we want to make interviewing Virginia Tech students a trouble free and enjoyable experience. We take very seriously the relationship we have with all the employers we work with, and our commitment to customer service is the integral part of that relationship. We began receiving requests from employers asking if we had the capability for them to interview via video and at the time we did not. After much discussion, we made the decision to equip one of our interview rooms for this time of interview. We do believe this type of interview makes sense for some employers in some situations and we are excited to be able to offer this as an alternative if this meets your needs. Skype is the video-chat software that we are using. If you have any questions or if this is something that you would be interested in, please let me know. fill quickly so call early! We look forward to having your organization
on campus next academic year. Not
sure you will be interviewing on campus? Need resumes of potential interns,
graduating seniors, or alumni? Simply contact us. Hokies4Hire has resumes that
are searchable by major, type of hire, and geographic region candidates are
seeking. You search on-line and contact the candidates directly. Mark Your Calendars: Fall 2010 Career Fair Opportunities It’s not too early to start
planning your recruiting events for fall 2010. Virginia Tech has a
number of Career Fairs in the fall sponsored by the colleges and professional
student organizations: · Computer Science Resource Consortium | 9.13.10| Computer Science Resources Consortium · Engineering Expo | 9.14-15.10| Student Engineers Council
These dates have been confirmed with the sponsoring organizations; however, since spring career fairs are still going on some of the links have current information. Registration for most of these fairs will begin this summer. You can also visit Career Services website for contact information for upcoming career fairs. From FUN to FORMAL: Are you looking for a fun and interactive way to connect
with students? Want to have a presence on campus? You may want to
consider being a sponsor for our Annual First-Friday-of-Fall semester
Tailgate Party which is scheduled for August 27, 2010. All
Virginia Tech students are invited to attend this entertaining atmosphere
where they play games, interact with staff to learn more about our services,
programs and resources. Typical attendance is 1200. Employers who
have attended this event have found it a great way to connect with students. If you’re seeking a more formal way to network with students you may want to consider sponsoring our Fall Dining Etiquette Dinner held annually in the fall semester. This venue is held at the Inn at Virginia Tech and gives students the opportunity to observe how to conduct themselves in social situations for which employers require a certain standard of conduct with customers and superiors. Are you looking to increase your campus visibility without coming to campus or in addition to coming on campus? Have you considered advertising in our Career Planning Guide? This guide is our most requested resource. Our faculty uses it with their professional seminar classes, it is widely by our students who are preparing for their job search, and alumni still call and request this guide. Each year nearly 12,000 guides are used and it has a great shelf life. This guide is made possible by the generosity of our employer partners. If you are interested in advertising in the guide, please contact Mary Ann Cole (mcole@vt.edu) or call 540.231.9616. Then you may want to consider becoming one of our employer sponsors
for events and activities on campus. Eastern
