Student opportunities: WORK & LEARN in Career Services

Programs overview

We offer four programs that enable students to get para-professional experience and learn by working in Career Services. Two opportunities are open to both undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at Virginia Tech. Two opportunities are appropriate for graduate students only.

Career Services Intern Program

Open to Virginia Tech undergraduate and graduate students.
Single semester (or occasional two-term) commitment for variety of project-related work.
Opportunities for summer, fall and spring semesters (and some two-term projects).
Flexible work schedule; 4-10 hours per week.
Academic credit is possible if permitted by your academic department.
Program began with our first interns in fall 2000.

Career Associates Program = CAP

Open to Virginia Tech undergraduate and graduate students.
Fall through spring semester academic year commitment.
Training, teamwork, and outreach activities to represent Career Services as a para-professional.
Flexible work schedule; averaging 50 hours per semester.
Program was launched for the 2003-04 academic year.

Graduate Assistantship

For graduate students in the Virginia Tech Higher Education (HED) program.
Fall through spring semester academic year, 20-hour per week, paid position.

Graduate Practica and Internships

Open to graduate students in the Virginia Tech Higher Education (HED) program, and to students from other graduate programs and institutions.
Typically one semester (fall, spring or summer) unpaid experience for graduate students to meet the requirements of their graduate programs for a work experience in a professional environment.
Hours per week depend on the requirements of your graduate program.
