Spring 2011 interns

• Students enrolled at Virginia Tech.
• Some internships open to all academic levels.
• Some internships specify academic level.
• Some internships open to all majors.

Nature of work:
• Project work, much of which can be done at times of your choosing.
• Specific projects vary by semester.
Examples: teaching assistant, marketing, publicity, event planning.

• Work with and for a specific staff member with whom you meet weekly or semi-weekly.
• Work with the Internship Program Coordinator who provides training and coordinates group meetings for all interns.

Number of internships available per semester:
Spring 2010 interns

• Varies. Typically 2 to 7 intern projects available each fall and spring semester, and sometimes summer.
• Some internships span two terms

Work term and hours per week:
Spring 2009 interns
• One semester minimum (fall or spring or summer) commitment.
• Some interns choose to work more than one semester.
• Some internships span two terms (e.g. spring+summer; summer+fall).
• Weekly meetings and training are at set times.
• Other work hours flexible; range from 4-10 hours/week, depending on your needs, interests and schedule.
• Certain internships may involve specific date/time availability. (Details in internship descriptions.)
• You state availability in your application.
• Work hours are agreed upon as part of your internship agreement.
Benefits:
• Learn how to work independently on a specific project.
• Gain experience related to your project area.
• Exposure to and experience in a professional office environment.
• Gain knowledge about and experience with Career Services resources and programs.
• Schedule flexibility.
• Meetings every other week with Internship Program Coordinator, who will arrange training for interns on career-related topics of interest as requested by interns.
Academic credit possible:
Summer 2008 interns
• Yes.
• Arrangements to earn academic credit must be made by you through your department; only academic departments may grant academic credit.
• If you choose to arrange earning academic credit through your department, the Career Services Intern Program Coordinator and your supervisor in Career Services will work with you to help you meet requirements of your department.

Application process:
Step 1.
Pick up or view online our Career Planning Guide and review it to become familiar with our services. Hard copy booklet is available (free to all students) in our office location during office hours.
Step 2.
Complete an application form (MS Word docx). (Hard copy or MS Word docx)
Prepare
your resume to submit with your application. See our online resume guide or refer to your copy of the Career Planning Guide (step 1).
Step 3.
Submit your application and resume
via e-mail or hard copy to contact info below.
If you are requesting academic credit or field study for this internship, attach/include/send a copy of the requirements and contract from your academic department with your application form and resume. Academic credit is possible for any of the internships in Career Services, if your department allows it.
Application deadline:
• Summer & fall 2012 internships deadline extended Wed., Apr. 18, 2012, 5:00 p.m.
• Spring 2013 internships: deadline tba; typically mid-November (2012).
• Applicants who are selected for interviews will be contacted by the Intern Program Coordinator and interviewed by the potential supervisor. Interviews will be scheduled to occur during the first week of December.
