Eligibility:

four of our seven spring 2011 Career Services interns

• Students enrolled at Virginia Tech.
• Academic level: Some internships open to all; some specify academic levels.
• Major: Some internships open to all majors; some specify preferred majors.
• Exact details: internship descriptions below.

Nature of work:

• Project work, much of which can be done at times of your choosing.
• Specific projects vary by semester.
    Examples: teaching assistant, marketing, publicity, event planning.

• Work with/for a specific staff member with whom you meet weekly or semi-weekly.

• Span varies: one or more terms, depending on project (e.g. summer+fall, fall+spring, spring+summer; summer only, fall only, spring only).

• Program began with our first interns in fall 2000.

Work term and hours per week:

Spring 2009 interns

• One or two semesters/terms.
    (Details in internship descriptions.)
• Weekly meetings and training are at set times.
• Other work hours flexible; range from 4-10 hours/week, depending on your needs, interests and schedule.
• Some internships involve specific date/time availability.
    (Details in internship descriptions.)
• You state availability in your application.
• Work hours are agreed upon in your internship agreement.

Benefits:

• Learn how to work independently on a specific project.
• Gain experience related to your project area.
• Exposure to and experience in a professional office environment.
• Gain knowledge about and experience with Career Services resources and programs.
• Schedule flexibility.
• Meetings every other week with Internship Program Coordinator, who will arrange training for interns on career-related topics of interest as requested by interns.

• Arrangements to earn academic credit must be made by you through your department; only academic departments may grant academic credit.
• If you choose to arrange earning academic credit through your department, the Career Services Intern Program Coordinator and your supervisor in Career Services will work with you to help you meet requirements of your department.

Application process:

Step 1. Familiarize: Review our Career Planning Guide to become familiar with our services. View online or pick up a hard copy (free to all students) in our office location during office hours.
Step 2. Prepare documents: Application and resume.

  Use our online resume guide or refer to your copy of the Career Planning Guide (step 1) as you prepare your resume.
  If you are requesting academic credit or field study for this internship, obtain (to submit with your resume and application) a copy of the requirements and contract from your academic department. Academic credit is possible for any of the internships in Career Services, if your department allows it.
Step 3. Submit: by the deadline, via e-mail or hard copy, to contact info below your application and resume (and, if applicable, academic credit requirements and contract).
