Career Services Intern Program
Spring 2009 Career Services Interns
Eligibility:
• Students enrolled at Virginia Tech.
• All academic levels considered for some internships; some internships specify level.
• All majors considered for some internships; some internships specify preferred majors.

Welcome to our summer-fall 2009 interns:
• Briana Bishop, Jane Fitzgerald, Denise Kee, Jami Kuhn and Ashley Whorley.
Nature of work:
• Project work, much of which can be done at times of your choosing.
• Specific projects vary by semester; often related to marketing, publicity, event planning.
• Work with and for a specific staff member with whom you meet weekly or semi-weekly.
• Work with the Internship Program Coordinator who provides training and coordinates group meetings for all interns.

Number of internships available per semester:
• Varies. Typically 4 to 7 intern projects available each fall and spring semester.
• Some internships span two terms (e.g. spring+summer; summer+fall).

• Program began with our first interns in fall 2000.
Work term and hours per week:
Summer 2008 Career Services Interns
• One semester minimum (fall or spring or summer) commitment; some interns choose to work more than one semester.
• Work hours are very flexible and range from 4-10 hours per week, depending on your needs, interests and schedule.
• Weekly meetings and training at set times; other work hours are flexible.
• You state availability in your application.
• Work hours are agreed upon as part of your internship agreement.
Benefits:
• Learn how to work independently on a specific project.
• Gain experience related to your project area.
• Exposure to and experience in a professional office environment.
• Gain knowledge about and experience with Career Services resources and programs.
• Schedule flexibility.
• Meetings every other week with Internship Program Coordinator, who will arrange training for interns on career-related topics of interest as requested by interns.
Academic credit possible:
• Yes.
• Arrangements to earn academic credit must be made through your department; only academic departments may grant academic credit.
• The Career Services Intern Program Coordinator and your supervisor in Career Services will work with you if you choose to arrange earning academic credit through your academic department.

Application process:
• Pick up and review the Career Planning Guide to become familiar with our services. This is available (free to all students) in our office location during office hours.
• Complete and submit an application form (MS Word doc) via e-mail or hard copy to Kristin Eicholtz, contact info below.
• Submit your resume with your application (via e-mail or hard copy). For guidelines on preparing your resume, see the Career Planning Guide or online resume guidelines.
• If you are requesting academic credit or field study for this internship, attach a copy of the requirements and contract from your academic department to your application. Academic credit is possible for any of the internships in Career Services, if your department allows it.
Application deadlines:
• Spring 2010 internships: deadline Wed. November 4, 2009.
• Applicants who are selected for interviews will be contacted by the Intern Program Coordinator and interviewed by the potential supervisor. Interviews will the scheduled during the week of Nov. 16.
• Summer & fall 2010 internships: deadline tba; last year's deadline was in early March.
