Just like there is more than one way to listen to your favorite music these days, there is ABSOLUTELY more than one way to approach your job search. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about your approach for the upcoming academic year.
Resources
Networking: is useful for finding unadvertised jobs. It is one of the number one methods used by Virginia Tech graduates. One of the many networking options available thorugh Career Services is VT CareerLink.
VT CareerLink: is a database of VT alumni who have volunteered to serve as networking contacts for current students and other alumni. CareerLink volunteers may provide: advice about how to enter a career field, a wide variety of careers that graduates of a particular major can pursue contacts in a particular career field, and possible internship/externship opportunities.
CareerSearch: is an online database of over three million companies of interest, including international companies (NOTE: these are not job openings). This information can be used to identify employers doing business in your filed of interest. Great for geographically targeting your job search and deciphering salary ranges for jobs and geographical locations.
Going Global: is an extensive online resource for the international job or internet search. Updated continually, this research tool contains more than 10,000 resources for finding employment at home and abroad.
On-Campus Interviewing (OCI): each year 500 employers interview through Career Services. Employers recruit on-campus for permanent, co-op, and internship positiooons. You can apply for OCI positions through eRecruiting.
Career/Job Fairs: there are a number of annual VT sponsored career/job fairs that bring in hundreds of employers. For a calendar of these events, please check out the Calendar of Events.
Post Graduation Report: each graduating class is surveyed; learn who their employers are, their job titles, and more. Select a class, find your major and college and see "Employers / job titles / locations of employed graduates." This report will also give data on "How graduates found jobs."
