If you are looking at advertised
job sources and not finding what you're seeking, you may need to prospect
for potential employers who aren't advertising positions,
but who might give an internship, co-op or full-time job to an someone
who has the initiative to do some research on the organization, make
contact and make a good pitch. |
| |
Many organizations post jobs on their
own web sites, but unless you know about the organizations, you're
unlikely to find their sites. |
| |
CareerSearch is a database you can search
for potential employers to get contact information and web addresses.
You can search on geographic location, type of industry, size of organization
and keywords. |
| |
If you are focusing your job
search on a particular geographic location, CareerSearch
is an excellent tool to identify organizations you might not otherwise
know exist. |
| |
If you are interested in a very
specific industry, CareerSearch is great for this purpose. |
| |
| Some
tips to using CareerSearch effectively: |
| |
CareerSearch is not a listing of jobs.
It is simply a listing of organizations. Once you find organizations
you would like to contact, you will be writing
or calling
or e-mailing or
visiting their web sites to ask or learn if they have a position.
You need to prepare to present yourself effectively. |
| |
CareerSearch is organized by industry,
not by the types of jobs people hold in the organization. So for example,
if you are looking for an accounting position, you might see if there
is an accounting department in a retail or manufacturing business
in your chosen location. You won't find those businesses by searching
for accounting; rather you'll find them by searching for retail or
manufacturing. Get the idea? You need to think about the types of
organizations in which you might find the type of position you want. |
