Missed Interview Policy

This policy applies to:

Missed Interview Policy

By participating in Career Services' On-Campus Interviewing Program, or by participating in Career Services' Connection Co-op and Internship Job Fair, and by voluntarily signing up for any interview, you are indicating that you understand and accept the terms of the Missed Interview Policy. Therefore, "I didn't know," is not accepted as an excuse for violating the policy.

Employers invest substantial time and money in recruitment efforts. If a student "no-shows" for an interview, this is a waste of the employer's time and money, it steals an opportunity another student could have had to use that interview time, and it damages the reputation of Virginia Tech in the view of the employer.

When you schedule an interview, and do not cancel that interview (by the Thursday midnight deadline for OCI, or per the instructions given to you at the Connection Job Fair), you are making a commitment to attend the interview, OR, in the event of an emergency need to cancel, you must notify the employer directly (find the contact in Hokies4Hire for OCI; follow instructions given to you at the Connection Job Fair). You must reach the employer and provide justification for why you cannot attend the interview.

If the employer does not receive your contact in a timely manner, and/or the employer does not consider your reason to be valid, or you simply no-show for the interview, the employer can report you as a "no-show," and you will lose your privilege to participate in OCI and Hokies4Hire. The "no-show" report is entirely at the employer's discretion.

If an employer reports you as a "no-show," you will be blocked from applying to additional employers and from scheduling future interviews through OCI. However, you will not be removed from interviews you have already scheduled, so it is essential that you attend any other interviews you scheduled. Failure to do so will result in additional "no-show" reports on your record.

The employer viewpoint, in response to a student's apology letter:

This is a letter from an employer in response to a student's apology letter for no-showing. He granted us permission to quote him.

Mr. -----,

I, too, am sorry that you missed the interview. We interviewed 15 students on that Wednesday, and unfortunately we had to decline interviews for several students because all of the slots were full, including the one we reserved for you. The career fair requires a great deal of time, effort, and expense for our organization, and the interviews are not granted casually.

I would suggest that in the future if you are too busy, that you not reserve an interview slot with a potential employer.

Sincerely,

Daniel Rabun
