Q1: Who can use Hokies4Hire? Can alumni use it?
A: All currently enrolled Virginia Tech students automatically have a Hokies4Hire account and can complete your profile and use the system.
A: Alumni who are actively job-seeking can request an account by sending an e-mail as follows:
Subject: request H4H account
Content:
• your full name
• an accurate e-mail address
• your Virginia Tech PID
• your Virginia Tech degree and major or graduate program
• your Virginia Tech graduation yearSend to our recruiting staff at hireahokie@vt.edu.
Your account will be activated by 5:00 p.m. the next business day.
Q2: Who should use Hokies4Hire?
A: Undergraduate and graduate students who are seeking any type of career-related employment, including internships, co-ops, career-related summer employment, and permanent positions at graduation. Recent graduates may find jobs of interest.
Q3: What does Hokies4Hire do for me?
A: Enables you to:
- UPLOAD YOUR RESUME and indicate you would like it viewable by employers. Employers seeking resumes of Virginia Tech students and alumni are given access to Hokies4Hire.
- APPLY FOR JOBS listed in Hokies4Hire, including jobs with on-campus interviews scheduled in the On-Campus Interviewing Program.
- Receive notices from Career Services about programs that relate to your major or career interests.
Q4: When should I use Hokies4Hire?
A: Jobs can be posted throughout the year, so you can view jobs and apply year 'round. Note that SOME of the jobs in Hokies4Hire are part of the On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) Program which runs for several weeks in fall and spring semesters. (See OCI FAQs.) OCI does not run all year; Hokies4Hire DOES run all year.
Q5: Who gets my resume after I complete my profile and upload my resume?
Does it go to all the employers who interview through On-Campus Interviewing?
A: No, your resume does not automatically go to all the employers who interview through On-Campus Interviewing (OCI). If that happened, those employers couldn't possibly review the volume of resumes and wouldn't know which students really want to work for them.
To have your resume go to a particular employer, you must (in Hokies4Hire) view and apply for each job that interests you; when you apply for a job, your resume is sent to the employer with that job.
See OCI FAQs.
Q6: Will employers contact me if they search Hokies4Hire and find my resume?
A: Yes, IF you've posted it, if your resume looks good, and if you have the qualifications they are seeking.
Bad news: We see a great many poorly written resumes submitted to our database, and we have had employers call us to complain.
Good news: Every Virginia Tech student can create a good resume if you use our guidelines for writing your resume and then have your resume critiqued through an appointment or walk-in advising; do revisions until you've got a competitive document. (Also read our Career Planning Guide, which is free when you visit our office, for resume guidelines and job search information.)
Q7: Do I need a cover letter when I apply for jobs in Hokies4Hire?
A: That will be specified in each individual job. If a cover letter is required, it will say so, and you should submit one (personalized to that employer and that job). If nothing is stated about a cover letter, then you don't need one to apply to that specific job. You can see more about writing cover letters.
Q8: Can Virginia Tech alumni participate?
A: Yes. If you completed your degree within the last month (according to the university Registrar's records), we will still have an active account for you.
If you completed your degree more than a month ago, you may request an account. See instructions above for alumni to request an H4H account.
Q9: How long can alumni participate?
A: After you complete your profile and post your resume, we'll e-mail you monthly to ask if you wish to continue to participate. There is no fee to remain active; however, if you don't respond, you will be inactivated.
When you accept employment, notify our recruiting staff at hireahokie@vt.edu, giving your full name and Hokies4Hire login name.
Q10: What if I have trouble logging in to Hokies4Hire?
A: Double-check the following:
Did you go to log in to Hokies4Hire?
Did you follow the instructions in Hokies4Hire to:
... use (your PID)@vt.edu as your username?
... use the last four digits of your student ID number as your initial password?
Still can't login?
E-mail hireahokie@vt.edu; tell us your full name, your Virginia Tech PID, and the error message.
