Sources for industry & government jobs

Use a variety of sources to find jobs and job leads:

  1. Web sites for specific career fields - many focus on opportunities for advanced degre holders.
  2. Web sites for government agencies and government jobs
  3. General web sites with jobs - general sites are searchable by career field, type of position, etc.
  4. Books in the Graduate Life Center (GLC).
  5. Professional journals and professional organization web sites. If you don't know sources already, ask your faculty for recommendations for your field.
  6. In The Chronicle of Higher Education:

Where to find information on non-academic careers for Ph.D.s List of many sources.

Non-academic careers for Ph.D.s Many articles.

  7. Networking - what it is and how to do it.
  8. Hokie Nation Network - social and professional networking exclusively for Virginia Tech students and alumni, sponsored by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association. Use this resource to connect with other Hokies by career field, to browse jobs and internships and to network professionally.
  9. Use Hokies4Hire - to publish your resume to resume books and to look for jobs; some jobs have interview dates for our On-Campus Interviewing Program.
  10. Events, such as career and job fairs. In advance of attending, to determine whether or not to attend, research the attending employers to determine if there is a match for your qualifications and career interests. Career fairs do not represent all industries, fields and types of employers.
