Fisheries Science: Description of Major

Fisheries science, offered through the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, focuses on the study, conservation, and use of aquatic animals and ecosystems. Virginia Tech’s program is one of the nation’s largest in freshwater fisheries, emphasizing recreational fisheries, endangered species, and aquaculture (fish farming).

Most graduates work for public fisheries agencies, environmental consulting firms, or public utilities. Because many jobs in this field require a master’s degree, the program emphasizes preparation for graduate school.
