Management: Description of Major

Management is the process of achieving organizational goals through the coordination of material, financial, and human resources. In the management major we provide our students with an integrated perspective on the overall operation of the organization. In doing so we emphasize versatile skills that can be applied in all sorts of organizations including leadership, ethical decision-making, team work/group work, computer skills and communication skills.

Experiential learning is stressed in the management major through internships, consulting projects, and service learning. Students can choose from two tracks within the major: human resource management and entrepreneurial, innovation, and technology management.

A manager’s success is dependent on the ability to handle complex ethical situations. Moreover, managers must be concerned not only with their own actions, but also with the ethical behavior of the people they lead.

Thus leadership and ethics are themes that cut across all courses. The department’s Business Leadership Center sponsors an annual symposium on business ethics. The leadership minor, available to students of all majors, is administered in this center.

Graduates take jobs in many sectors of industry as well as in government agencies and non-profit organizations.
