Physics: Description of Major

The main goal of physics is to discover and understand the fundamental laws of nature governing all physical phenomena. The curriculum provides a broad background in fundamental science and an analytical approach to problems.

Students can pursue either a B.S. or a B.A. according to their career goals.

The B.S. is recommended for students interested in physics graduate study or in joining the technical staff of an industrial or government laboratory. It may lead to a 5-year B.S./M.S. for qualified students.

The B.A. allows students to pursue an interdisciplinary course of study with a strong background in physics. It is ideal for students interested in science-education certification.

Undergraduate research and co-op opportunities, which are often associated with funded projects, are available to qualified students.

The department also has excellent computer facilities and a student machine shop.
