Landscape Architecture: Description of Major

Landscape architecture involves the design, planning, and management of sustainable human environments on many scales—from garden, to plaza, to park, to entire regional landscapes. Projected demand for landscape architectural services outpaces current supply. Graduates can look forward to a wide range of employment opportunities in private consulting offices and in public agencies.

Virginia Tech offers a five-year, accredited bachelor of landscape architecture in a small, selective program where faculty members know students as individuals. A theoretical and applied approach to landscape architectural design is emphasized.

The program provides:

  • opportunities to specialize in environmental planning and design, urban design, regional landscape planning and site design;
  • access to state-of-the-art computer and video technology;
  • opportunities to study abroad in Europe, England, and Australia;
  • opportunities for professional internships;
  • pre-professional experience through projects in the college’s Community Design Assistance Center;
  • preparation for a profession that is licensed/certified in 47 states.
