About the award

  • In 1989, the Award for Excellence in Career Advising was established to recognize the value of career advising at Virginia Tech.
  • The award is given annually to a Departmental Career Advisor (DCA) or Pre-Professional School Advisor at Virginia Tech.
  • Nominations for the 2010-2011 award are invited from March 1 through April 17, 2012. Nominations are welcomed from students, faculty and staff. Nomination dossiers are kept on file for one year. You may re-submit a nomination from the previous year by making a written request to Ms. Johanna Smith. You do not need to re-submit the nomination materials.
  • Nomination criteria (below).
  • Letter (pg 1) and nomination form (pg 2) (MS Word docx)
  • Deadline for 2011-2012: Tuesday, April 17, 2012.
  • The selection committee is comprised of faculty, Career Services staff, and students.
  • The award is presented in fall semester during the annual Departmental Career Advisors Luncheon sponsored by Career Services.
  • Since 2002-2003, a $500 monetary award is given to the award recipient.

Nomination criteria:

  • Nominees must be Departmental Career Advisors (DCAs) or Pre-Professional School Advisors for the current academic year.
  • Personal characteristics such as creativity, communication skills, concern for students, and enthusiasm as they pertain to the role of career advisor.
  • The development of innovative career advising resources and outreach programs for the department.
  • While many of these individuals also serve as academic advisors, it is important to distinguish their career advising accomplishments.
