The Career Services Post-Graduation Report is a study of Virginia Tech graduates and reports what bachelor degree recipients are doing after they leave the university. The difference between the Class of 1997 and the Class of 1996 was marginal.
92.4% of the 1996-1997 bachelor degree graduates responded to the annual follow-up survey. Compared to the 1995-96 graduates, this year experienced an increase in employment (2%) and a drop in graduate school attendance (1.8%). Those graduates still seeking employment remained the same. Overall, not a significant change from the previous class.
Eighty percent of those surveyed reported full-time employment, full-time graduate school, or part-time employment or graduate school status. Five percent of the graduates are working part-time or attending graduate school part-time. A small number of graduates indicated they were working and attending graduate school on a full-time basis (1.4%). Again, this is similar to 1996.
Of those employed, 82% said they are in career-related positions. Sixty-nine percent of the class of 1997 reported previous experience (i.e., summer job, internship, cooperative education) during college.
Personal contact (34.9%) was the primary method which students said they used in finding employment, followed by On-Campus Interviewing (21.7%), Job Advertisements (13%), and Previous Experience (12.3%). These job search methods varied among colleges. Note: On-Campus Interviewing increased 4% from 1996 overall; a larger percentage increase was noted in the College of Engineering and the Pamplin College of Business.
The average salary for a 1996-97 bachelor's degree recipient from Virginia Tech is $28,696, an increase over last year. Salaries offered to Virginia Tech graduates are competitive with the salary survey published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
Most Virginia Tech graduates are employed in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, the District of Columbia and Florida; Followed by Pennsylvania and Georgia.
