- The Career Services Post-Graduation Report is the result of
Career Service's annual survey to learn the post-graduation
plans of Virginia Tech bachelor's degree graduates. See
methodology for details.
|
- 85% of the Class of 2001 bachelor's degree graduates responded
to this survey.
|
- 76% of those surveyed reported having a plan following graduation,
compared to 81% for the class of 2000. Generally, this was the
picture across the individual colleges. See Post-Graduation
Status (PDF) for details.
|
- Six month following graduation, attempts were made to update
incomplete records. Of those students indicating "still
seeking employment"' during stage I (survey prior to graduation),
follow-up (six months after graduation) could not be made to
19.4% of the graduates. This category of unreachable graduates
is listed separately in the status report to accurately reflect
the number of students actually seeking employment six months
following graduation. In previous reports, these numbers were
combined and listed as "seeking employment."

|
- Experiential education (i.e., summer job, internship, cooperative
education) during college continues to be an important factor
in obtaining employment after graduation. Eighty-seven
percent of the Class of 2001 reported having relevant experience
(compared to 83% for the previous class). See previous
relevant experience for details.
|
- University-wide, personal contacts/networking (40%) was the
primary source by which graduates found the jobs they accepted,
followed by Career Services (18%), other/career fairs (16%),
Internet (9.5%), and previous work experience with that employer
(8.2%). The data for each source of jobs varies widely among
colleges. See how graduates found
jobs for details.
|
- The average salary for the bachelor's degree Class of 2001
from Virginia Tech was $36,940 -- a 6.3% increase over
the previous class. See the Salary
Report (PDF) for details.
|
- The highest number of Virginia Tech Class of 2001 graduates
accepted employment in Virginia (1,192), followed by Maryland
(146), North Carolina (98), Washington, DC (97), Pennsylvania
(63), and Florida (53). California entered the top 10
for this class, edging out Georgia. See geographic
locations of employed bachelor's degree graduates for details
and year-to-year comparisons.
