January Externship Program

Back to welcome for basic info.

This is what some of our 2007 Externship students said about their experiences:

  • "Virginia Tech's Externship program alleviates students' fears about the working world. Through shadowing and observing, they are able to experience the position first hand. I was able to network and now have a potential employer. With the program, I am only confident that I can compete with the active job market of today."
    - Annabelle Ombac, Senior, COMM
(Externed with APEX Systems, Inc. in Richmond, VA)
  • "An externship is a great way to test the waters of a career without immersing into a sea of regretfulness. You get to experience a career field for a few days; it allows you to reassess if it's what you truly want to study."
    - Jameka Hicks, Freshman, CPE
(Externed with PrintPack in Williamsburg, VA)
  • "The externship experience was a great method for making connections for the future. I learned a lot about what I would like to do in the future, and hope to pursue getting a job with the company."
    - Cassie Nelson, Junior, AE
(Externed with Orbital in Greenbelt, MD)
  • "Virginia Tech's externship program is a great way to experience first-hand the career you are interested in. It is like a trial run of the job that you might potentially want after college. Additionally, it is a great way to meet superiors and experienced employees within your career."
    - John Kim, Freshman, US
(Externed with WhitingTurner Contracting Co. in Chantilly, VA)
  • "This is an invaluable opportunity, the insight you gain into the company and industry is second to none."
    - Andrew Satterfield, Junior, FIN
(Externed with Financial Management in Richmond, VA)
  • "An externship allows you to stop being a college student and step into the workplace and experience a little bit of the real world."
    -Victoria Mah, Junior, CEE
(Externed with Gorove/Slade in Chantilly, VA)
  • "Externship is a great opportunity for job shadowing and it is best to do when someone is undecided about choosing a major."
    -Ahsan Bahir, Junior, ISE
(Externed with Micron in Manassas, VA)
  • "Five days out of your winter break is worth the experience you won't forget for a lifetime."
    -Patricia Brennan, Junior, PSYC
(Externed with Radford University Career Ctr. In Radford, VA)
  • "My externship with Schnabel Engineering allowed me to make excellent industry contacts for future job offers, as well as gave me the opportunity to get a feel for what a career in my discipline will be like. The actual field work and hands-on aspects are invaluable, as there is no substitute for experience and doing the work in a professional setting outside the classroom."
    -Scott Hutchins, Senior, GEOS
(Externed with Schnabel Engineering in Baltimore, MD)
  • "It was a lot of fun and gave me the confidence to pursue what I want in a career. It was awesome. Highly recommended."
    -Laren Taylor, Sophomore, BIT
(Externed with Tyco Electronics in Lynchburg, VA)
  • "As a junior who is seeking a summer internship, the Externship Program was a great way to learn about an industry before jumping into something without any hands-on information. It could also give me a leg up on my peers for gaining an internship with the company."
    -NaEda Young, Junior, MGT
(Externed with Virginia Asset Management in Midlothian, VA)
