Betsy McCoy exemplifies extraordinary
change and success of VT Career Services

By Donna Ratcliffe, Director

Imagine, you are 17 years old, graduating from high school and starting your first day at work tomorrow morning.  You take a deep breath and report to work as the secretary to the director of the department.  Over the next 39 years you develop your passion for dedicated work of serving others.  You become well known for being reliable, customer service oriented, hard working, with a can-do attitude and a warm and welcoming smile.  Over time you become the office manager and later are approached to build and lead the recruiting services for recruiters coming to campus to interview students at the college for which you work.   Now, 39 years in the same department, you decide that it is time to retire and start the next chapter of your life.

Betsy McCoy

Retiring after nearly 40 years
Last day in the office March 31st

Betsy McCoy, Recruiting Services Manager, began her work in what was then called The Placement Office in 1971, the day after high school graduation.  She has given this office, now known as Career Services, so much of herself, her heart and soul.  She loves what she does, where she does it, for whom she does it and with whom she does it!  Betsy states that her greatest achievement over the past many years has been her phone and face-to-face contacts with recruiters assuring that recruiter needs are met and that their visits to campus are successful, easy, and pleasant.  She would never mention it, but she has often put in 50-60 hours a week to make sure this has been accomplished!

Career Services isn’t the only department who acknowledges Betsy’s exemplary work.  In 1993, Betsy received the Division of Student Affairs Heroine Award for her diligent work for students and employers.  The President’s Award for Excellence was awarded to Betsy in 1995 for her dedication to selfless customer service for corporations and government agencies.  The university and our students have greatly benefitted by these valuable relationships as a result of Betsy’s leadership with the recruiting services team’s consistent and continuous high quality work.

When asked what she is going to do with her new-found freedom, Betsy said, “Ahhhh, Parker” and to celebrate life.   She describes how she has lived the same routine since she was 17 years old.  Now she is good and ready to choose how she wants to spend her time.  For example, in November she and her husband, Leon, became first-time grandparents to Parker.  She is crazy about her grandson and can’t wait to be with him as often as possible.  Her parents live a few miles away and she wants to spend more time with them as well.  Betsy wants to buy a kayak and float down the New River.  In addition, three years ago Betsy became involved with the local Special Olympics and has experienced profound rewards in the work she has done with disabled adults while engaged in softball, basketball, track, and bowling.  She looks forward to dedicating more time to these special members of our community.

Please join our staff in saying “Thank you!  A job well done!” to our incredible colleague who exemplifies significant change and success of Career Service.  She has given so much of herself to build relationships and serve organizations to meet their hiring goals.  Betsy’s last day at Virginia Tech is Friday, April 30; but her last day on-the-job is Wednesday, March 31!

If you would like to send a letter, photos, card, and/or contribution towards a special retirement gift, please send these to Ms. Lisa Boothe, Career Services, (0128), Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061.

How Skype Is Changing the Job Interview

There are many methods of conducting interviews these days, you have:

·         Group Interviews

·         Tag- team interviews

·         The Screening interview, (most common on college campuses).

·         Interviews over lunch

·         Stress interview

·         Informational interview

Most all of these interviews are done face to face with the recruiter(s) sitting across from the applicant.  There are many benefits for both the recruiter and the applicant to physically be together during the interview.  In my experience, the applicant is more relaxed and the recruiter is more likely to get a better assessment of the applicant’s talents.  The body language is also much more readable with the applicant sitting across the desk.  So, as I talk about the opportunities that video interviewing offers, I want to also be clear that in my opinion the most effective means to assessing talent is sitting across the desk from the person you are interviewing. With that said, there is another method of interviewing that is gaining popularity and that is video interviewing.

We are always assessing the services we offer to our employers and we want to make interviewing Virginia Tech students a trouble free and enjoyable experience.  We take very seriously the relationship we have with all the employers we work with, and our commitment to customer service is the integral part of that relationship.  We began receiving requests from employers asking if we had the capability for them to interview via video and at the time we did not.  After much discussion, we made the decision to equip one of our interview rooms for this time of interview.  We do believe this type of interview makes sense for some employers in some situations and we are excited to be able to offer this as an alternative if this meets your needs.

Skype is the video-chat software that we are using.  If you have any questions or if this is something that you would be interested in, please let me know.

Mark Your Calendars: Fall 2010 Career Fair Opportunities

It’s not too early to start planning your recruiting events for fall 2010.  Virginia Tech has a number of Career Fairs in the fall sponsored by the colleges and professional student organizations:

·         Computer Science Resource Consortium | 9.13.10|  Computer Science Resources Consortium

·         Engineering Expo | 9.14-15.10|  Student Engineers Council

These dates have been confirmed with the sponsoring organizations; however, since spring career fairs are still going on some of the links have current information.  Registration for most of these fairs will begin this summer.  You can also visit Career Services website for contact information for upcoming career fairs.

From FUN to FORMAL:
Get your brand in front of students with sponsorship opportunities:

Are you looking for a fun and interactive way to connect with students?  Want to have a presence on campus? You may want to consider being a sponsor for our Annual First-Friday-of-Fall semester Tailgate Party which is scheduled for August 27, 2010.  All Virginia Tech students are invited to attend this entertaining atmosphere where they play games, interact with staff to learn more about our services, programs and resources.  Typical attendance is 1200.  Employers who have attended this event have found it a great way to connect with students.

If you’re seeking a more formal way to network with students you may want to consider sponsoring our Fall Dining Etiquette Dinner held annually in the fall semester.  This venue is held at the Inn at Virginia Tech and gives students the opportunity to observe how to conduct themselves in social situations for which employers require a certain standard of conduct with customers and superiors.

Are you looking to increase your campus visibility without coming to campus or in addition to coming on campus?  Have you considered advertising in our Career Planning Guide?  This guide is our most requested resource.  Our faculty uses it with their professional seminar classes, it is widely by our students who are preparing for their job search, and alumni still call and request this guide.  Each year nearly 12,000 guides are used and it has a great shelf life.  This guide is made possible by the generosity of our employer partners.  If you are interested in advertising in the guide, please contact Mary Ann Cole (mcole@vt.edu) or call 540.231.9616.

Then you may want to consider becoming one of our employer sponsors for events and activities on campus.
