| When can I work?
What are schedule options for my major? |
| 1. |
The earliest students
can work is the summer following freshman year. |
| 2. |
For some engineering
majors, students cannot schedule a work term that splits the senior
year because the senior design project extends from fall
through spring semester of one academic year, and those academic terms
must be completed consecutively. |
| 3. |
Schedule information
for majors: |
| |
For some majors, there are
specific work / school schedules that are permissible. This is typically
based on when required courses are available and the sequence in which
these courses must be taken. |

|
|
|
| How many work terms
are required? |
| • |
The Career Services
Undergraduate Co-op / Internship Program requires at least one term
of full-time, paid work; the work term must extend for a full semester
(fall or spring) or full summer, lasting 13 to 15 weeks. |
| • |
Some academic departments
and some employers require a multiple-work-term commitment. Before
you begin searching for employment, see work
/ school schedule options for majors (above) or consult your
academic department to learn its requirements. As you discuss
co-op and internship opportunities with employers, make sure you
completely understand each employer's requirements. |
|
|
| What exact terms
do I work? |
| • |
See work
/ school schedule options for majors (above) or consult your
academic department to learn its requirements. |
| • |
After you have accepted
employment (and attended required Orientation),
you will make an appointment with your Career Services co-op /
internship advisor, and in that appointment an individual Work
/ School Schedule will be developed and put in writing for you;
this will be agreed to by you, your advisor in your academic department,
your Career Services co-op / internship advisor, and your employer.
(How
to make an appointment.) |
|
|
| What are the dates
of the semesters and work terms? |
| • |
See the calendar
of work term and semester start and end dates. This covers current
and future academic years. |
|
|
| Can I change my
Work / School Schedule after I start work? |
| Maybe. Do this: |
| 1. |
Discuss the change with
each person who signed your schedule: |
|
• |
Your Career
Services Co-op / Internship Program advisor |
|
• |
Your advisor
in your academic department |
|
• |
Your employer's co-op /
internship program representative |
|
• |
Cranwell International Center,
if you are a student visa holder / non-resident alien |
| 2. |
If all agree to the change: |
|
• |
Confirm your request
and the agreement in writing (via e-mail) to your employer. |
|
• |
State the names and titles
of each person with whom you spoke and who has agreed to the change. |
|
• |
Copy the request to your
Career Services Co-op / Internship Program advisor. |
|
Your co-op /
internship program advisor in Career Services will respond to confirm
the change. |
| Warning: if you simply
discuss the change and get verbal consent, but you fail to confirm
the request and the agreements in writing, the change will not be
made to your schedule. |
|
|
| Additional important
information for employers: |
| • |
For multi-work-term assignments:
please be aware that once a student begins to work, s/he may not have
flexibility to change the work / school schedule because of the timing
of course offerings. Therefore, please plan carefully to abide by
the work / school schedule you sign. If you anticipate the possible
need to change a student's schedule in the future, discuss this with
the student at the time you extend the offer so the student can determine
whether his/her academic curriculum allows that flexibility. If an
unexpected need for change arises, contact the student and the co-op
/ internship advisor for the student's major. |
| • |
If a change is needed
in the work / school schedule, the student is responsible for seeking
consent from all parties and placing the request in writing to his/her
Career Services co-op / internship advisor. |
| • |
If you need to terminate
a student's co-op / internship employment, see evaluation
> terminating a student. |
| • |
If you have questions
about work / school schedule possibilities for specific majors,
please see schedules
for majors, or contact the co-op
/ internship advisor(s) for the majors. |
