Undergraduate Cooperative Education / Internship Program (C.E.I.P.)
Final Report Guidelines
Purpose:

Each student who successfully completes the CEIP will summarize his/her overall work experience to provide helpful information for prospective co-op/intern students.

When:
The final report should be submitted to your Career Services CEIP advisor by the Reflection Meeting deadline after you complete your final CEIP work term.  Either bring your report to the meeting or send your report as an MS Word document, attached to e-mail to your Co-op / Internship Program advisor at Career Services.

What happens to it:
After being read and approved by your Co-op / Internship Program advisor, your report will be placed where it can be read by prospective co-op and internship students (and others who may be interested).

Content & Length:
Include any information (positive and negative, described diplomatically) of interest to students considering a co-op or internship position with your employer. If you adequately address all the content requested, your report should not be less than two double-spaced, typed pages. Make it as long as you wish, and be thorough.  Remember your audience: freshmen and sophomore students who may not have yet worked in a co-op or internship position, but are considering options and employers. Think about what you wished you had known before you accepted your co-op or internship position. See details below for specific items to address.

You MUST provide a cover page to include the following:

  Date your report is written
Organization, and division (if applicable) for which you worked
  Location(s) where you worked
All terms you worked (i.e., Fall 2007, Spring 2008, Summer 2009)
  Your name
  Your major
Expected graduation date (month and year; e.g. May 2010)

At a minimum, include the following in the body of your report:

Starting out:

What led you to accept employment with this organization. Be specific about how you learned of, or made first contact with, the employing organization and/or the job. When did you accept (spring of freshmen year, fall of sophomore year, etc.)? How far in advance of the start date did you get your offer? What other options were you considering, and how did you make your choice? (Mention your GPA at the time if you wish, but you are not required to do so.) If you had it to do over, is there anything you would do differently (i.e. questions you would ask, information you would seek)?

  Responsibilities:
Provide a summary of the projects and assignments with which you were involved. Did your responsibilities increase with time and with each subsequent work term? What did you learn? What did you contribute to the organization? Did your responsibilities mostly involve working directly with others or working alone? How did your academic work relate to your co-op or internship work?

  Work Environment:
Comment on the culture of the organization and the attitudes of its employees. Do you consider the environment to be more structured or more flexible? Were your co-workers supportive? Did you feel that your employer was interested in your professional future?

  Supervision and Training:
Describe the level of guidance and support you received during various points in your work experience. Did you have a mentor in addition to a supervisor, and if so, how did your mentor assist you? Was training provided up-front or was it ongoing (or both)? To what extent were you able to apply knowledge gained from your college education? To what extent were the necessary skills learned on the job?

  Living Environment:
Indicate if you lived with your family or independently. If you lived away from your family/home, comment on housing and on assistance (if any) provided by your employer to provide or help you find housing. Address transportation (had/need private car, public transportation, etc.) and cultural and social opportunities in the area where you worked. Describe the cost of living; if possible, give price examples for apartments, food, and public transportation. Comment on social/recreational activities, particularly those (if any) sponsored or supported by your employer. To what extent were you able to meet and get to know other co-ops and interns (were there committees for social and other purposes in which co-ops and interns could get involved)?

Thank you.  We value your view of the experience and want other students to know about it.
