Student eligibility
Who can do co-ops and internships?
Any student at Virginia Tech may search for co-ops or internships, and we strongly encourage you to do so and we'll help you with where to find jobs and job search skills. One of the most important things employers look for when hiring graduating students is whether or not you have gotten experience related to your career field before graduation.

Who can enroll in the Undergraduate Co-op / Internship Program?
After you have secured a co-op or internship position, you may enroll in the Co-op / Internship Program, if criteria on the following are met:
Undergraduate academic level
Major
GPA
Transfer students
International students
Terms of the job / position

Undergraduate academic level
You must be an undergraduate student to enroll in Career Services Co-op / Internship Program. Career Services is not authorized by the university to enroll graduate students.
Graduate Students who wish to register with the university during a work assignment must follow the requirements of Graduate School Cooperative Education Program.

You must have completed your freshman year, and you may not have completed your senior year. Note that some engineering majors can not split their senior semesters with a work term. This is because the fall and spring semester of senior year must be done consecutively because of the senior design project.

Transfer students must have established a GPA at Virginia Tech before you may begin a work term for which you are enrolled in the program. See information below for transfer students.

Academic major
Students in all undergraduate majors are eligible to enroll.
You can view actual participation by major.

GPA

Career Services requires that you have a 2.0 minimum.
Specific academic departments and specific employers may have higher minimum standards.

You must have established a GPA at Virginia Tech. See information below for transfer students.

After you are employed and enrolled in the program, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 (or higher if required by your academic department). If your GPA drops below the minimum, you will be in a probationary status for the Co-op / Internship Program and must raise your GPA to the minimum during your next regular semester in order to continue in the program. The university's academic eligibility policy (see the university catalog in academics) supercedes the Co-op / Internship Program policy. You may not be enrolled in the Co-op / Internship Program if the university has suspended you.

Transfer students
You must have established a GPA at Virginia Tech before you can be enrolled for a work term.  You may seek a co-op or internship position before establishing your Virginia Tech GPA, but you cannot be enrolled as an employed student until your Virginia Tech GPA is verified.

International students

International students must get authorization from the Cranwell International Center before you can apply for co-op or internship positions. Your visa status determines whether or not you are eligible to work in the United States in a co-op or internship capacity.

Be aware that many employers cannot, for legal reasons, hire international students. This is determined by the policies of the employer and is not negotiable.

Terms of the job / position
To be enrolled in the Career Services Undergraduate Co-op / Internship Program, your work assignment must be:
full-time
last at least one full semester (fall or spring) or full summer
you must be paid by your employer
Students working in unpaid and/or academic-credit-bearing internships would not enroll with Career Services, but should consult their academic departments to learn their department's policy. Only academic departments can grant academic credit.
