Undergraduate Co-op / Internship Program
Steps before your first work term

Co-op / Internship Program Orientation
You are required to complete the program orientation before you meet with your advisor and before you can be enrolled in the program.

Check-out appointment
Call 231-6241 during office hours to schedule your check-out appointment with your Co-op / Internship Program advisor in Career Services.
If possible, bring your offer letter from your employer to the check-out appointment.

Work / School Schedule
In your check-out appointment, an individual Work / School Schedule (PDF file) will be written, specifying terms you will work and be in school. It must be agreed to and signed by you, your Career Services Co-op / Internship Program advisor, the co-op / internship contact in your academic department, and your employer. You will take the schedule to your academic department and to your employer to get approval. Return the signed form to Career Services within the first four weeks of your first work term. Your Work / School Schedule will be used to enroll you in the Co-op / Internship Program for each of your work terms, so it is essential that you plan to follow this schedule. If you anticipate needing a change, you must discuss this with your advisor.

Dates to start and end work terms
See the calendar of work / school term start and end dates.
This gives begin and end dates for upcoming semesters and work terms.
Use this as a guideline to plan your work term start and end dates with your employer.

If you are a non-resident alien / student visa holder:
You are required to make an appointment with the Cranwell International Center (Clay Street; call 231-6527 for an appointment).
You must take your offer letter and your signed Work / School Schedule with you.

Learning objectives
For each of your work terms you will establish learning objectives using the Learning Objectives form.
You may use:
PDF version (print and complete by hand) or
MS Word version (complete using MS Word; print to obtain signatures)
See learning objectives for more explanation.

Meeting with the Co-op / Internship Program student services coordinator
After you have your Work / School Schedule signed by the contact person in your academic department, call 231-6241 to schedule an appointment with the Co-op / Internship Program student services coordinator.  Bring your offer letter and the folder you were given in your check-out appointment.

Becoming enrolled in the Co-op / Internship Program during your work terms.
Enrollment in CEP 4084 does not earn you academic credit, but it does keep you enrolled in the university during those terms you are registered and it does appear on your transcript.
First work term:
The program student services coordinator will enroll you in CEP 4084 for your first work term. To stay registered you must:

Return your Work / School Schedule and your Learning Objectives form, both signed by your employer, by the first four weeks of your work term.
Pay your fees to the University Bursar by the specified deadline, or you risk being dropped from enrollment (just as you would be dropped from classes if you did not pay tuition).
Subsequent work terms:
The student services coordinator will also automatically enroll you for your future work terms based on your Work / School Schedule, so it is essential that you follow the schedule. Contact your advisor if you anticipate any need for change.

GPA requirements
  See GPA requirements.

Tuition and fees
  See details about fees.

Scholarships, financial aid, and budget tuition plan
If you are receiving scholarships or financial aid, you must inform the office of Scholarships and Financial Aid of your enrollment in the Co-op / Internship Program. See the on-line information if you have questions.
If you participate in the Budget Tuition Plan (pay tuition in installments), see the instructions of the University Bursar to reduce or cancel your budget tuition plan during your co-op terms.

On-campus housing and housing contracts
If you are enrolled in CEP 4084 to work during part of an academic year when you live on campus, you are released from your on-campus housing for the term you work. See Hokie Housing & Residence Life for information and contacts.
