How to get interviews at CONNECTION

Fair day is Tuesday
Interview day is Wednesday
Interviews are scheduled during the fair and/or Tues evening

Weather contingency plan

Q. How can I get interviews?

Talk with employers during the open job fair on Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Make sure you've read how to prepare, what to do at a job fair or have gone to a job fair prep seminar, so you'll know how to make a good impression. Each employer decides whom to interview. If an employer wants to interview you, she will invite you to interview, either during the job fair, or by contacting you later on Tuesday evening. Be prompt in checking and responding to your phone messages and e-mail. This is a tight turn-around for scheduling interviews, so don't count on an employer to contact you twice if you don't respond. S/he may move on to contact the next student s/he can reach. Make sure your voice mail message is appropriate.

Q. Will all the employers at CONNECTION interview the day after?
A.

No. Some employers will have other ways of following up with students after the job fair. Some employers will invite students on site to interview. Some employers will conduct telephone interviews after the job fair. Some employers will come to campus later to interview. If you are interested in an employer, and the representative at the fair doesn't tell you how they will follow up, ASK (it's perfectly appropriate). Each organization has its own system for recruiting and hiring; Career Services will not know what each employer's plans are. (Employers who plan to conduct interviews the day after the 2009 fair are listed below.)

Q. Is CONNECTION interviewing the same as the On-Campus Interviewing Program?
A.

No. Some employers who come to Connection may also participate in the On-Campus Interviewing Program, but the interviewing scheduled through the Connection fair is not the same and is not done the same way as the On-Campus Interviewing Program.

Connection interviewing is all scheduled during the job fair day, Tuesday, with interviews held only on the day after the job fair, Wednesday.

On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) spans 18 weeks of fall and spring semesters; and you apply at least four weeks in advance to be considered for interviews. Some employers you meet at Connection may tell you to apply through OCI or Hokies4Hire or through Career Services. To learn what to do, see how to participate in OCI.

Q. Where do I go if I have an interview?
A.

See student check-in for interviews.

Q. When do I check in for my interview(s)?
A.

See student check-in for interviews.

Q. Where are the interviews held?
A.

Employers will not be interviewing in the same location you found them during the job fair.

Most interviews will be in Cassell Coliseum.
However, some employers may interview at Career Services.

If your interview is in Career Services, the employer must tell you this in advance. We would NOT expect you to go to Cassell Coliseum for an interview at Career Services!

If your interview is in Cassell: how to know the room/booth location:

At the fair, the employer will give you a pass with your interview location;
Or
Come to student interview check-in to get your pass and find out where to go.

Q. What if I have back-to-back interviews?
A.

Make sure you have all passes before the first interview so you'll know where to go and can get between interviews quickly. If you don't have a pass, come to student interview check-in.

Q. Which of the employers are conducting interviews the day after the 2009 fair?
